He studied art history at Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen and in the 1970s received training in life drawing from the graphic artists Elsa Nielsen and Palle Nielsen. As a painter, he is autodidact. Elgaard often works with motifs drawn from urban spaces, architecture, and reflections, where reality is transformed through composition and perspective. He has carried out several major public commissions, including large-scale wall paintings, and is represented in several Danish museums such as the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), ARoS, and Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg.
