Harrison Gilman was born in Los Angeles and raised in Santa Barbara. In 2018, he graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Filmmaking and a minor in Art History. During his time in film school, Gilman used painting as a creative outlet, and it slowly became his primary focus. Sketchbooks evolved into large scale canvases nailed to the bedroom wall. Gilman was soon accepted into his first group show and began to receive commission requests. By the time he graduated, he had committed to becoming a painter. Gilman’s work was first displayed in the 2018 We Rise Art Fair in Los Angeles. His first solo show was in 2019 at Galerie Tangerine in Nashville, TN. Since then, Gilman has had multiple solo shows and various group shows, as well as a series of live painting events. Harrison Gilman's paintings are extracted from the subconscious, often beginning with a trance-like state of gestural abstraction. Some paintings remain in this stage, while for others, it is a foundation from which he extracts shapes, symbols, and characters. Often combining the abstract and the real, the outcome is a combination of cubism, geometric figuration, primitive art, and cartoon illustration. Gilman's work can be found in collections in Los Angeles, New York, Scottsdale, Toronto, Basel, and London.
