In 1963, Rockwell began to create paintings that allowed him to address more substantive matters. Responsible for helping to shape the perception of American society and culture in the 20th century, Rockwell could be considered a documentarian and a mythmaker. Now free to openly express his views on current events, Rockwell painted some of his most powerful works, which dealt directly with issues like poverty, civil rights, and the Vietnam War.
