Despite almost nonexistent pacing and a script full of holes, Singer is an enjoyably goofy look at the mid '80s. Surprisingly toned-down and appealing Sandler is Robbie Hart, wedding singer, ultimate nice guy, and rock-star wanna-be, who's jilted at the altar. Waitress Barrymore is engaged to a skirt-chasing stock broker. It's immediately clear that they belong together, and the rest of the movie is spent on them chasing each other through various contrived obstacles, to the obvious ending. Features great cameos by punk-rocker Billy Idol, Jon Lovitz (as a rival wedding singer), and Steve Buscemi (excellent as the groom's jealous dad always liked you best brother). Musical highlight is Sandler's heartfelt rendition of the J. Geils Band's Love Stinks. Isn't it a little scary that we're already spoofing the '80s?
