The Sitter: Life & Historical Context Thomas Jonathan Jackson was born January 21, 1824, in Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). Orphaned young and raised in modest circumstances, he overcame limited early education to gain admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1842. Graduating in 1846, 17th of 59 cadets, he served with distinction in the Mexican–American War, earning brevet promotions for gallantry. In 1851, Jackson became a professor at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, teaching artillery tactics and natural philosophy. Known for his strict discipline and religious conviction, he remained at VMI until the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861. During the war, Jackson earned the nickname “Stonewall” at the First Battle of Bull Run. His 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign remains studied for its operational mobility and strategic deception. Serving under General Robert E. Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia, he played significant roles in the Seven Days Battles, Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.
