Thomas Willis Silk Embroidered Hand Painted Seascape

1st Dibs

$2,900

Late 19th century, American Maritime, silk work portrait, depicting the vessel "Glenda" of New York. The ship is shown broadside at sea with an American flag at the Stern and signal pendants at the mast. The hull, rigging, and flags are formed with applied silk thread embroidery over a painted sea and sky, creating a distinctive dimensional surface. The work is housed in a period bamboo frame, a framing style frequently associated with late 19th century Americana Maritime works. Thomas Willis described his works as "silk ware pictures" his works were often commissioned by ship owners and captains, and examples are held today in Maritime Museum collections including Mystic, Seaport, and the Peabody Essex Museum. this is coming out of a 60 year collection… Fresh to the market never been seen. There are some thread losses. His signature is in the wood frame. There are a couple of small holes in the canvas. The painting presents beautifully ...American folk art at its best.
