Trio Of 19th-Century Hand-Colored Sowerby Coastal Shell Engravings In Walnut Frames

Chairish

$695

A beautifully cohesive set of three early 19th-century hand-colored Sowerby shell studies, newly presented in solid walnut frames with archival double matting. Each piece measures 11 x 14 inches framed, creating a polished, ready-to-hang trio with the warm, collected look of a coastal study, natural history wall, library, powder room, or layered gallery interior. The presentation is what makes the set especially strong: soft green inner matting, warm neutral outer matting, and solid walnut frames give the shell studies a refined natural-history feel without becoming overly formal. Displayed together, the three works read as a complete visual grouping, balanced in color, scale, and subject. The shell studies are original early 19th-century hand-colored works associated with George Sowerby’s natural history shell illustrations. Their delicate color, fine detail, and scientific arrangement give them the charm of antique cabinet specimens while the fresh archival presentation makes them easy to place in a finished interior. Each piece is framed with glass; glass was removed for photography to reduce glare. Newly framed with acid-free, lignin-free archival matting and backing.
