From a San Francisco estate, likely acquired through Butterfield's auction house (now Bonham's), this trio of graphite portraits are by T.S. Bramwell in 1849 who was likely a student of Sir Thomas Lawrence using an illustration by Sir Thomas Lawrence from his earlier hand-tinted engravings of 1837 that was featured in P.G. Patmore's Cabinet of Gems. English portrait painter Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830). Lawrence was a child prodigy who became one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation. He was known for his elegant and expressive portraits and his ability to capture the likeness and character of his subjects. Lawrence was appointed Painter-in-Ordinary to King George III and later became the president of the Royal Academy. He was a key figure in the Romantic movement, which emphasized emotion and the individual. One portrait is of Thomas Lawrence Bloxam, the nephew of the British portrait painter Sir Thomas Lawrence, inscription reads "Red T.L. Bloxam Nephew and Godson of Sir Thos Lawrence” The older child portrait is of the “Mms Aston Niece of Sir Thomas Lawrence” The youngest reads “Red Rowland Bloxam Nephew of Sir T Lawrence” The text is handwritten, possibly in pencil.
