It was commissioned by Gilles Berthelot, the Mayor of Tours and Treasurer-General to King Francis I. The château was not owned by any queen of France as a personal retreat. Its design reflects a blend of French traditions and innovative Italian decorations, characteristic of the period during Francis I's reign.
