It would be hard to imagine two more different cities architecturally than the formal grandeur offered by Vienna, Austria and the exuberant 20th-century sprawl of Los Angeles, home of the artist of this work. But it was Vienna’s Hofburg that caught the eye of Carole Doyle Peel (1934-2016) in this expansive scene. The Hofburg is a "city within a city," consisting of 18 wings and 19 courtyards. In German, it is simply referred to as the Hofburg, which translates to "Castle of the Court.” It’s also widely known as the Imperial Palace (German: Kaiserliche Hofburg) since for more than 600 years, it was the principal winter residence of the Habsburg dynasty. Today, the complex serves as the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria. Peel, who grew up in Los Angeles, California, was greatly influenced by Rembrandt and specialized in portraits and graphite drawings. Her works are in a number of museum collections.
