Viennese Porcelain Design Watercolor, Alt-Wiener Porzellan Fabrik, Ca. 1840–1850

Chairish

$682

An original watercolor and gouache drawing for a porcelain cup and saucer design, attributed to the Alt-Wiener Porzellan Fabrik, Vienna, circa 1840–1850. This elaborate geometric scheme, centered on an interlaced six-pointed star enclosing floral cartouches, is encircled by arabesques and scalloped gilt ornament on a soft cobalt blue and orange ground. The design’s symmetry and chromatic refinement attest to the high level of artistic oversight maintained in Vienna’s porcelain workshops, where painters translated such pattern sheets into enamel and gilding on luxury tablewares. Comparable Porzellan-Vorlagen are preserved in the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, which document the evolution of Viennese taste from classical restraint toward ornamental eclecticism. The present sheet exemplifies the technical precision and painterly delicacy associated with the Alt-Wiener style during its mid-nineteenth-century revival. Presented in a giltwood frame with moiré blue silk mat. Provenance: Ursus Prints Ltd., 981 Madison Avenue, New York City. Measurements: 15.75 in w x 13.875 in h (framed).
