Maestro active in Venice in the 19th Century Title: View of Venice with the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute and Punta della Dogana Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 29 × 41 cm – with frame 38 x 49.7 x 5.5 cm Carved and gilded wooden frame Not signed The painting is a late 19th-century work in the style of 18th-century Venetian vedutismo, depicting a panoramic view of Venice. The scene captures a view from the Grand Canal opening onto the Basin of San Marco, a classic Venetian scene with boats and sails on the water featuring prominent architectural landmarks. The painting depicts a view of Venice, more precisely the Grand Canal and Santa Maria della Salute, a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at the Punta della Dogana. The church stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco. The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venetian skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring painters like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, Claude Monet, John Singer Sargent, Francesco Guardi. The style is reminiscent of masters like Canaletto (1697-1768) and Francesco Guardi (1712-1793), known for capturing the light and atmosphere of the city. Such paintings were popular before photography, serving as detailed "postcards" for wealthy collectors.
