This 15.5" H by 15.5" w 5 " d Marka Janus-Faced Mask from Mali is a superb vintage piece, hand carved from a single piece of wood. It is intricately detailed and features striking red tassels on its crest. With a rich history rooted in the Bamana culture, the Marka continue to use masks for traditional ceremonies and rituals, despite modern Islamization. It may be associated with the N'Tomo initiation for young boys, a significant tradition in Bamana culture. Despite minor losses, the mask is in excellent condition overall, as shown in the accompanying pictures.
