Poster study for Nine Discourses on Commodus by Cy Twombly at Leo Castelli. This is a lithographic poster that Cy Twombly realized for the exhibition “Nine discourses on Commodus” (1964) at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City, where the artist exhibited a series of nine oil paintings, realized in Europe and created in response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. The name of the series comes from the Roman Emperor Commodus, who was known for his cruelty and fierceness. Overleaf is printed: “Leo Castelli 4 East 77th New York 21. CY Twombly March 14th to April 10th 1964”. Cy Twombly 's work is a direct reflection of the ancient Greco-Roman past that surrounded him in his chosen home in Rome. At first sight, his work, mainly graffiti-like scribbles and scratches may look childish. But it is nothing of the kind, and the result of a brilliant man, with a sophisticated technique. from drawings with crayon and house-paint, to experimentation with symbols and numbers, to collage, to paint dripping, Cy Twombly experimented a lot of different techniques.
