W.j. Hubard Silhouette Young Woman W/ Unusually Detailed Shaded Bonnet & Mantle

Chairish

$450

This very unusual silhouette of a young Victorian woman has incredible detail right down to the folds of the skirt of her dress and mutton sleeves- you can almost feel the velvet fabric. A white wash with a blue tint has been employed over the top of the silhouette and showcases all the delicate features of the lace intricately painted on her bonnet and mantle. She holds a secret something in her right hand. Faintly marked "The Hubard Gallery" in the lefthand corner. "This concern was founded in England in 1822, primarily in order to make commercial use of the precocious talents of the cutter W. J. Hubard. it was presumably founded by the 'Mr Smith' whom we know to have been Hubard's business manager during the period when he worked for the gallery. From September 1822 when Hubard's professional career began )until March 1826, Hubard was probably the only, and certainly the principal, silhouette artist working for it." Very plain antique black wooden frame measuring one half inch.
