Walter Lewy 1905-1995, Surrealist Scene - signed and dated 1974. Surrealism - Symbolist Art Dimensions: 60 x 50.5 cm Unframed: 55.5 x 46 cm Walter Lewy (1905-1995, Dortmund, Germany) was a Brazilian painter and illustrator of German descent, best known for his surrealist and symbolic visual language. Forced to flee Nazi persecution, he emigrated to São Paulo in 1938, where he developed a rich body of work blending dreamlike imagery, spiritual connotations, and botanical references. A self-taught artist, Lewy produced paintings, drawings, and graphic works often featuring fantastical figures, anthropomorphic forms, and abstract landscapes. His early training in lithography and illustration influenced the precision of his compositions. In Brazil, he participated in major exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennials (1951, 1960, 1965, 1969), and organized retrospectives at the MAM-SP. Today, Lewy is recognized as a key figure in Brazilian surrealism and the art of exile.
