This original oil on canvas by Indiana artist Mildred Farlow Niesse (1915–2008) reflects the work of a painter deeply connected to her home state. Known for her evocative depictions of Indiana barns, rural landscapes, and scenes from the Indianapolis 500, Niesse built a celebrated career marked by both artistic excellence and regional pride. She earned top honors twice at the Indiana Artists Club exhibition at L.S. Ayres & Co., receiving first prize in 1966 and again in 1976. Her long-standing contribution to the arts also earned her recognition as an Old Time Exhibitor at the Indiana State Fair after forty years of exhibiting. In 1980, Niesse received a distinguished commission to paint the Memorial Union Building at Indiana University in Bloomington, a work later reproduced as a limited edition of 500 color lithographs collected by alumni around the world.
