Willard Leroy Metcalf (1858-1925) was an American Impressionist who became known for his landscape work. His paintings were compared with the poetry of Robert Frost, Walt Whitman, and other writers, earning him a reputation, in the words of one critic, as the "poet laureate of the New England hills."
