The Nippon Design Center NDC was formed in 1959 "to further develop and improve the quality of advertising design in Japan" with the backing of Asahi Breweries, Asahi Kasei, Nippon Steel, Toshiba, Toyota Motor, Nikon, NKK and Nomura Securities. The Werkkunstschule (previously the School of Arts and Crafts since 1896) was formed by the School of Applied Arts and Institute of Industrial Design in 1949, forming the Higher Technical School for the Graphic Arts Industry in 1963; in 1972 the engineering, textile and graphics schools were brought together to form the new Bergische Universitat Wuppertal / University of Wuppertal.
