Great Big Canvas

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) After stumbling upon a Poster advertisement job for the play Gismonda, Czechoslovakian artist Alphonse Mucha became an overnight success. Not only did he land a six year contract from the actress Bernhardt (the star of Gismonda), but he also introduced Paris to "Mucha Style" which we now know and refer to as Art Nouveau. Mucha's work is best known for his portrayal of beautiful celestial women, full of intricate details and elaborate lines. This style had a large resurgence in the 1960's as seen through psychedelic posters as well as more recently with Manga animation artists.
