This 19th Century George III walnut tavern clock is a superb example of oversized English wall clocks that are rare and difficult to find. These massive clocks were designed originally to hang on the wall of a public or commercial space, which may explain why relatively few have survived. The sublimely refined case is nearly five feet tall, and beautifully-aged with exceptional color and patina. The hood is substantial but well-proportioned. It has a finely-turned frame surrounding a large-faced dial painted white with crisp black Roman numbers. The dial has meticulously-cut matching pierced brass hands and a chapter ring that indicates the minutes, quarter-hours and hours. The trunk’s full-length Georgian-style door is made from a fine cut of burled Walnut. Its carved sides terminate at a stepped-moulded base that gracefully rolls back to the wall. The shaped weights, full-length pendulum, brass key, hinges and escutcheon are original. The surface wear, rich patina and dial discoloration are resounding testaments to the originality and authenticity of this early 19th century clock.
