This pair of French giltwood sconces was born in the years following the arrival of the Second Empire with Napoleon III as a ruler. Showing the renewal of the Rococo taste that had swept throughout Europe in the 18th century, each of these sconces features the curvy lines and controlled asymmetry that is typical of the style. Scrolls and foliage motifs intertwine with each other to create a sinuous gilded backplate, to which the arms are attached. The flower shaped bobeches support the electrified candle sleeves.
