Sconce By J. T. Kalmar For Kalmar Franken Kg, 1970s

Chairish

$2,283

The sculptural Kalmar wall sconce, manufactured in Austria in the 1970s, is a perfect example of luxurious modernist lighting, where functionality blends with the artistic expression of glass. The fixture’s form consists of vertically arranged, elongated modules made of thick, hand-formed glass—a hallmark of the Kalmar Franken Kg manufactory, renowned for its mastery in working with crystal and structural glass. The individual segments, with their irregular surfaces in shades of blue and amber glass, beautifully refract light, creating a soft, shimmering effect on the wall reminiscent of an ice sculpture. Seemingly austere, the modular design reveals a subtle play of colors and reflections when illuminated, typical of mid-century style, where simplicity of form combines with a dramatic lighting effect. The internal metal frame does not detract from its lightness. This wall lamp is the quintessence of the Kalmar style—elegance based on the transparency of the material, the play of light, and perfect proportions.
