Folk Art Bridal Wardrobe

Chairish

$3,881

Antique painted cabinet dating from 1773, from the Swabian Alb, southern Germany. Its heavy, lived-in character and original paintings give it an extraordinary appearance. Both the design of the cabinet and the painting are simple and primitive, but authentic and a typical example of folk art from the region. What makes this piece of furniture truly exceptional is that the base of the cabinet has remained completely blank and unpainted, while the original decoration in various motifs and shapes has been painted over it by hand. It is also remarkable that this fragile paint can still be admired after 250 years. Some parts of the original painting are worn and faded, but this only adds to the characteristic and authentic appearance of the whole. On the crest, the wedding date 1773 can still be read, albeit with some difficulty. The cabinet has been thoroughly inspected and professionally restored, with an eye for originality and character. The construction is solid, the paintwork is worn but preserved, and the patina has been retained. The layout is still original, with one shelf and coat hooks. The cabinet can be locked with the original working lock. Old, sporadic woodworm traces have been checked and treated. Parts of the crest and plinth have been professionally restored/replaced. The furniture can be transported in two parts and can therefore be dismantled. Wedding cabinets like this are rarely found. The age, patina, and the way this cabinet has been painted make it an exclusive piece of furniture. 199 cm high, 128 cm wide, 52 cm deep.
