Scandinavian Modern Lounge Chair By Alfred Christensen For Slagelse Møbelværk, 1940s

Chairish

$4,599

A beech wingback armchair in the Danish Modern tradition, upholstered in a warm, textured bouclé and produced by Alfred Christensen for Slagelse Møbelværk in the 1940s. The piece typifies the workshop's approach: honest materials, careful construction, and a sculptural confidence that remains quietly striking today. The defining element is the pair of open, hand-carved beech arms. Each traces a fluid arc from seat rail to tip — looping outward, then curling inward with a naturalistic ease rarely found in carved beech. The honey-toned beech has deepened over the decades into a rich, warm brown, its grain smooth and close. The high back tapers into softly flared wingback ears, generous without feeling imposing. Four tapered, outward-splayed legs give the silhouette an easy lightness from every angle. The cream-to-warm-grey bouclé upholstery — a later reupholstery — sits comfortably against the warmth of the frame. The pairing works well: tactile fabric against carved wood, understated but considered. A well-made piece from a respected Danish workshop, at home in both a mid-century and a contemporary interior. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs, designer records, or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
