Scandinavian Oak Wingback Lounge Chairs In Striped Wool, 1940s, Set Of 2

Chairish

$10,041

A substantial and imposing pair of Danish wingback armchairs constructed in solid oak and upholstered in their original striped wool, dating from the 1940s. The silhouette is tall and commanding, featuring a high arched back with three softly rounded lobes across the top, flanked by full, outward-curving ears. Each chair is fitted with an original neck pillow suspended by a single long fabric cord that runs up over the back, down the reverse, and ends in a weighted, draped fabric tassel — a refined upholstery technique from the 1940s that keeps the pillow in position through counterbalance. Both cords are intact. The striped wool upholstery, featuring a rich forest green ground accented by lime yellow pinstripes, is fixed directly to the frame with a continuous, neat run of patinated bronze nailheads along the seat rail, back, and ears. The armrests are a standout sculptural feature, deeply carved from solid oak with a sweeping, organic scroll and volute profile that terminates in a prominent rounded cylindrical cap. Below the lower seat rail, a beautifully decorative zigzag-cut apron runs the width of the front and side frames. The chairs are raised on turned front legs, all tied together by a full, robust box stretcher with undulating, wavy stretchers for maximum structural stability. A masterclass in traditional Danish cabinetmaker comfort. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
