A hand painted armoire or wardrobe, c. 1820, Austria. Made from pine using traditional peg construction techniques with decorative iron hardware. Painted elements feature classic Alpine folk art motifs. These type of wardrobes were traditionally commissioned as wedding gifts or used as a dowry. Peg construction was used so wardrobes could be transported in two pieces, making it easier to install in upstairs bedrooms.
