This classic Chinese bench originally resided in the interior courtyard of a Qing-dynasty home, providing much-needed outdoor seating on hot summer days. Dated to the mid-19th century, the bench is crafted of northern elm (yumu) with mortise-and-tenon joinery, humpback stretchers and spiral carvings at the feet. The everyday bench is simple and easy, darkened with deep brown lacquer and a beautifully aged patina.
