Fired at Cone 10 for enhanced durability, the high-temperature process creates a distinct, naturally occurring variation in the clay’s color. Each tile is individually hand-cut and assembled without grout, demanding architectural precision to ensure a seamless fit within the frame. Unglazed tiles are treated with a penetrating sealant to minimize water absorption and prevent staining, ensuring both beauty and functionality. Cade Cahalan is a Los Angeles based furniture designer and craftsman whose work explores the interaction between wood and clay. His debut collection Xylolith (from xylo meaning 'wood' and lithos meaning 'stone') challenges these two seemingly opposing materials to reinterpret ceramic tiling and traditional joinery. ​​​​​​​All pieces are handmade by Cade in one-off batches and can be custom ordered.
