English Charles II period carved oak sidechairs a pair. This early form is generally referred to as a backstool, as it evolved from the humble stool. The back is deeply carved and both splats have a head centered in the carving, some historians speculate that the head is meant to represent Charles II. This style of back and carving is linked to the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire regions of England. The front has a boldly turned stretcher and front legs, while the sides have double flat stretchers and the back a single stretcher; all of the stretchers make for a strong, robust chair that is also visualliy compelling. This chairs was designed to have a loose cushion to increase the comfort and show off the needlework abilities of the household.
