Fine Inlaid Marquetry Lyre-Back Side Chair, France, C. 1900

Chairish

$2,495

Refined circa 1900 marquetry side chair featuring exceptional inlaid decoration and a sculptural lyre-form back. The chair is richly ornamented throughout with floral and foliate marquetry, culminating in a striking figural portrait medallion inlaid into the seat panel—a detail typically reserved for higher-end continental pieces. The elegant proportions, curved legs, and architectural back splat suggest a Neoclassical Revival influence, with craftsmanship that reads immediately as decorative and collectible rather than utilitarian. Purchased in 1999 from The McNally Company Antiques (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) and valued at $1,450 at the time (original receipt included). The chair has remained largely decorative and shows remarkably light wear for its age. Details Circa 1900 Intricate marquetry inlay throughout Lyre-back design with carved and inlaid elements Mixed woods including walnut, burl, and lighter fruitwoods Decorative portrait medallion in seat Condition: Very good antique condition. Minor surface wear consistent with age, including light edge wear and small inlay imperfections. Structurally sound and stable. Overall presentation is excellent. Dimensions: Seat width: 17.5"; Seat depth: 15″; Seat height: 17.5″; Overall height: 35″ Notes: Ideal as a decorative accent chair, desk chair, or collector’s piece.
