Chairish

$1,247

This 125 year old wicker chair was made and sold by the Heywood Brothers and Wakefield Company of Massachusetts during the first year after their merger. The company was the primary producer of high end wicker furniture during the heyday of wicker furniture’s popularity. This chair was pictured in the company’s first catalogue, page 51-52. See image from The Complete 1898-1899 Illustrated Catalog of the Heywood Brothers and Wakefield Company. Dover Publications, 1982. Although it doesn’t retain its original label, it was purchased together with 3 other wicker chairs produced during the same time period, all painted white and retaining their makers labels. See other listings in this shop. This chair incorporates iconic wicker designs: curlicues and scrollwork on the back and skirt, beadwork along the back rail and skirt, cane seat, and densely-woven unique fancywork on the back panel, reed circles on the skirt, tapered legs, and wrapped and tapered side supports.
