Matthew Rose founded Matthew Rose & Sons, 335 Mare Street, Hackney, East London, E8 in 1854. Matthew Rose’s son, Edwin, continued running the store, and developed it into Hackney’s leading department store, selling furniture and home goods at 347-357 Mare Street and 2-18 Amhurst Road. It features a single dovetailed drawer, carved back splash, turned and carved front legs, straight back legs, beautiful floral carvings, and plenty of surface space. Solid, sturdy, and fully functional, with cosmetic imperfections consistent with age.
