Tremendous early engraved and cast bronze mortar and pestle. The mortar stands 9.13" high, but the pestle is an impressive 15.5" high. The mortar is engraved with a floral and fish scale motif by the dolphin handles (dolphin the fish and not dolphin the mammal). Just imagine this hefty, yet distinct piece of medicinal or culinary object in your home or office. Most likely European in origin and possibly 18th Century. The weight, scale and decoration point towards very early and important. Good overall condition with some dings, tarnish, fine scratches and wear consistent with age and use. The approximate measurements of the mortar are 9.13" high x 10.5" from handle to handle and 10" diameter at the lip. The approximate measurement of the pestle is 15.5" long.
