Stone Crucible-Tier Monolith, 1800s

Chairish

$961

A superb utilitarian vessel carved from a single block of natural stone, this 19th-century trough-crucible embodies the power of handcrafted rural objects, where function meets sculptural simplicity. Its organic, slightly irregular form oscillates between the traditional trough and the crucible, revealing authentic craftsmanship, likely stemming from ancient regional know-how with strong rural traditions. The stone, probably limestone or volcanic sandstone based on its porous texture and visible grain size, displays an exceptional patina, deeply marked by time. Natural traces of moss and lichen remain, reinforcing its raw, archaic, and decorative character. The piece is remarkably well preserved, without any significant structural alterations, retaining all its solidity despite its age. with its sculptural presence and understated mineral quality, this piece lends itself equally well to indoor display—as a curiosity, centerpiece, or monumental catchall—and to outdoor use, as a planter for herbs, a small ornamental pond, or a birdbath. A rare piece, both utilitarian and contemplative, that commands attention in any space. Dimensions: 47 × 36 × 21 cm.
