Known as a calligrapher's table, this expansive Chinese writing table once gave a Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) scholar-official ample space to paint or practice calligraphy. To cultivate uncluttered and inspiring surroundings, only a few carefully-arranged objects would have been placed upon the table, such as a brush pot, inkstone or table screen. This classic painting table dates to the mid-19th century and has a rectangular design with inset legs, double stretchers and simply curved spandrels. Crafted of northern elmwood, the table is finished with a layer of dark brown lacquer that accentuates the swirling wood grain beneath.
