This impressive cabinet in black lacquer is from Qinghai province in Northwestern China and is distinctive in style and finish of this region. The upper section remains intact keeping this stunning piece in its original state, as many cabinets of this style were taken to restoration workshops in China to be cut down to make the lower section a more practical style of sideboard. The painting are still very much visible, though faded over time, providing decoration on the doors and front panels, depicting vases of flowers and other valuable artefacts that are standard on this type of piece and represented the owner's rank and status. Originally used to showcase prized objects on the upper section with books and private documents in the cupboard space below - the two doors are set centrally with a fixed panel at either side, this was designed to make it difficult to access the furthest parts of the space inside, thereby deterring any would be thieves. Use today as an imposing statement piece, providing ample storage, intrigue and a taste of Chinese history.
