18th Century Swedish Gustavian Painted Chest Of Drawers With Original Blue-Green Paint
Chairish$3,750
An exceptional 18th-century Swedish Gustavian chest of drawers, retaining what appears to be its wonderfully aged original blue-green painted surface beneath a beautifully developed patina. The restrained elegance of the Gustavian style is expressed through its clean architectural form, subtly serpentine drawer fronts, molded base, and understated proportions, allowing the remarkable surface and craftsmanship to take center stage. The hand-painted finish exhibits the soft tonal variation, honest wear, and exposed underlayers that collectors prize in authentic Swedish country furniture. Decades of natural oxidation and use have created a depth and complexity impossible to replicate, with gentle distressing concentrated along edges, drawer lips, and the molded black top. Rather than diminishing the piece, this untouched surface tells the story of more than two centuries of careful use and preservation. Equally distinctive is the chest's original brass hardware, featuring uncommon six-pointed star escutcheons paired with shell-form bail pulls and matching brass keyplates. The hardware remains beautifully proportioned to the case and contributes significantly to the chest's character and desirability. The gracefully shaped drawer fronts demonstrate the hand craftsmanship typical of late 18th-century Swedish cabinetmaking, while the dovetailed drawer construction and individually hand-fitted drawers reflect the work of a skilled provincial cabinetmaker. 42Lx 21.75D x 28.75H
