Late 18th-Century French Provincial Walnut Wedding Commode

Chairish

$8,995

Authentic late 18th-century French provincial walnut commode, circa 1780, traditionally referred to as a wedding commode, a form commonly given as part of a marriage dowry in rural France. The commode features three drawers with carved heart-shaped raised panels, symbolizing love and union, and retains its original brass rosette pulls and escutcheons. Crafted using traditional methods, the piece exhibits hand-cut dovetail joinery, wide-plank solid wood drawer bottoms, and remnants of early decorative paper lining the drawer interiors—details consistent with 18th-century French construction. The walnut surface has developed a deep, warm patina over centuries of use, with wear patterns that speak to its history while preserving its strong visual presence. Imported from France and acquired from DS Antiques, this commode is a compelling example of provincial French craftsmanship intended for both daily use and symbolic significance.
