Pair Of End Tables, Roger Capron, Vallauris C. 1970

1st Dibs

$3,948

Elegant set of two tables dating from the early 1970s. The top is composed of a very successful arrangement of 12 handcrafted stoneware tiles, some of which are hand-stamped with a plant. By revisiting the ancestral technique of imprinting on terracotta, practiced since Antiquity, Roger Capron achieved enormous success in a period marked by a return to nature aesthetic. Here combined with a brushed iron base with mortises, the stoneware is even more sublime. Apart from some traces of oxidation on the steel belt, the condition of these tables is absolutely remarkable.Note that the legs are removable, making transport easier.About the Artist Roger Capron (1922-2006) is one of the most proeminent ceramicists of french post war period.Graduated and then teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Paris, he moved to Vallauris in 1946 to produce mainly decorative pieces. He is a major actor in the rebirth of this village of potters marked by the presence of Picasso. From 1963, Roger Capron devoted exclusively his production towards art tiles and decorative panels. Two of his most famous achievements are the Harbour station in Cannes in 1957 and the entire decoration of the Byblos Hotel in St Tropez in 1968.Awarded at the triennial of Milan in 1954 and at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels in 1958, his artistic and architectural expression has been the subject of numerous exhibitions throughout the world with a great retrospective in 2003 at the French National Museum of Ceramic.
