Late 19th Century Antique American Rocking Chair With Original Black Paint And Stenciled Decoration
Chairish$575
This American (Boston style?) version of a black painted rocking chair features a stencil of a fruit bowl, flowers, and leaves. Cherry arms with a delicate, tapered scroll end. Considering the large swirl pattern, we believe the saddle seat is red oak. The blade rockers are pegged for attachment. The piece has a great patina. Although similar to a Boston-styled black blade rocker, the saddle seat is unusual for Boston-style rocking chairs, so we do not consider it as such. Purchased at an estate sale in North Carolina, it may be a southern-made hybrid of the Boston style and the American Windsor design - an unusual rocker. Given its heavy patina, wear and signs of usage, we date the piece to the late 1800s. It is an extremely comfortable, solid, rocker, and a beautiful piece by the fireplace or anywhere in your home.
