1970s Hand-Knotted Caucasian Rug

Chairish

$1,950

Hand-knotted Caucasian rug woven in Azerbaijan under the Azerkhalcha cooperative system during the late Soviet period. Executed in the classical Shirvan/Kuba geometric style, the rug features a deep indigo field with three stepped hexagonal medallions, stylized zoomorphic figures, and precise workshop-level symmetry. The piece demonstrates strong design clarity and excellent preservation. Origin: Azerbaijan (Kuba–Shirvan region) Date: Circa 1975–1985 Dimensions: 51 × 70 in (130 × 178 cm) Foundation: Wool warp and weft Pile: Wool Knot Type: Symmetrical (Turkish/Ghiordes) Knot Density: Approx. 90–110 KPSI Dyes: Predominantly synthetic (1970s–1980s textile standards) Color Palette: Indigo, madder red, ivory, sky blue, terracotta The rug features three vertically aligned hexagonal medallions, each with star-centered motifs framed by stepped outlines typical of Shirvan weaving. Surrounding the medallions are stylized birds and abstract zoomorphic figures, a defining characteristic of Kuba–Shirvan iconography. The multiple borders include: • A narrow “running dog” guard • A main border of reciprocal geometric motifs • A series of zigzag and hooked-element patterns executed in terracotta, sky blue, and ivory The crisp geometry and balanced composition indicate a skilled cooperative workshop rather than village production, consistent with Azerkhalcha’s quality standards during this period. During the 1970s–1980s, Azerkhalcha produced a revivalist series of Caucasian rugs based on 19th-century Shirvan and Kuba prototypes. These rugs preserved traditional motifs while offering improved weave regularity for domestic and export markets. Mid- to late-Soviet Shirvan-style pieces are increasingly sought by collectors for their authenticity, stability of dyes, and decorative versatility.
