$5,500

A Qing Dynasty carved stone architectural temple figure, in the form of a foo dog guardian lion. Created in China in the 18th/19th century, the antique solid stone sculpture featured seated with one paw on ball, rising on square plinth pedestal base, showcasing an impressive attitude, expressed by its tiled head, open mouth and kinetic pose, and well carved mane with whirls. Rare with stone carvings this work features impressive open work around legs and ornate, richly detailed pedestal stand with incised decoration, reminding us of its worldly, celestial aspect and enhancing the dynamism of the statue. Stone guardians such as this magnificent example were used as building ornaments, and adorned the exterior courtyard of a traditional Buddhist temple.
