Bacchus Allegory, Early 1700s, Pine Wood Sculpture

Chairish

$2,197

Beautiful arolla pine wood sculpture, finely carved and depicting a cherub holding a bunch of grapes, allegorically linked to the cult of Bacchus. The invention of covering the cherub's nudity with a cloth held by a shoulder strap rope is elegant, and the anatomy is well-structured. The cherub rests on a faux rocky ground that refers to the Roman Baroque style. The carving, probably of northern origin, can be dated to around the mid-eighteenth century. The height of the work is 72cm. We attach a certificate of authenticity to the sale.
