A splendid pair of full-round carved wooden angels, polychrome and gilded, a true masterpiece from the mid-17th century, destined for lovers of high-quality sculpture, coming from a prestigious private collection. Regarding their provenance, these sculptures, presumably originally placed at the base of an altar in the presbytery, are part of the finest Roman Baroque production. The vigorous plasticity of the robes that sinuously envelop the figures, the intense expressiveness of the faces, enraptured by a divine vision, and the incisive carving of the feathered cloaks of the large outstretched wings and the thick locks of hair recall the most illustrious statuary prototypes of one of the greatest exponents of the Baroque period, Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), from whom our anonymous sculptor skillfully drew compositional inspiration and formal solutions. It can therefore be assumed that the two wooden statues under examination were produced in a Roman workshop in the second half of the 17th century by an artist trained in Bernini, distinct from the sumptuous style that dominated the European scene throughout the century, with strong affinities to the works of Ercole Antonio Raggi, known as the Lombardo (Vico Morcote, 1624 – Rome, 1686) or Ercole Ferrata (Pellio Intelvi 1610 – Rome, July 10, 1686). This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history.
