A fine Chinese scholar's stone. Made of nephrite jade from the Hotan (Hetian) region of China. Scholar's rocks (gongshi, 供石) are naturally occuring rocks that are appreciated for their aesthetic and naturalistic qualities. Examples of some desirable qualities of a scholar's rock include asymmetry, resonance, texture, glossiness of surface, and resemblance to mountainous landscapes. Together with a wooden plinth specifically carved to hold the stone. The sides of the plinth are decorated with floral carving. Simply a wonderful Chinese scholar's stone! Date: 20th Century Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: There is some roughness to the tip of the jade. Otherwise, there is some edge wear, some fine & light scratches & tool marks to the surface throughout, and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age.
