$3,204

Sculpture “Archer”, Otto Lessing, gilt bronze and onyx base, early 20th century – Germany Material: Gilt bronze and onyx base Title: “Archer” (“Bogenschütze”) Artist: Otto Lessing (1846–1912) Foundry: Aktien-Gesellschaft Gladenbeck Period: Early 20th century Country of origin: Germany Provenance: Private collection Good condition considering its age and use / Arrow missing Overall dimensions: 30 x 10.5 x 8 cm Dimensions without base: 18 x 10 x 7 cm Spectacular sculpture “Archer” (“Bogenschütze,” original German title) in gilt bronze, a work by Otto Lessing, based on an original design from 1908. Many small-scale reductions were produced from this design by the prestigious Aktien-Gesellschaft Gladenbeck foundry in Berlin. The human figure stands out for its great dynamism and the meticulous study of human anatomy. It captures the precise moment of maximum physical effort and tension, when the archer's body bends, creating a line that emulates the tension of the weapon. It is displayed on a double onyx plinth or base, which adds value and beauty to the figure. Otto Lessing (1846–1912) was one of the key figures in monumental sculpture and architectural design in Berlin between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the son of the painter Carl Friedrich Lessing, with whom he began his artistic training, and the great-great-nephew of the famous Enlightenment writer and philosopher, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. He participated in the creation of facade sculptures, reliefs, and interior decorative elements for the most important public buildings of the German Empire, such as the Reichstag in Berlin (German Parliament), the Lessing Monument (dedicated to his famous literary ancestor), Berlin Cathedral (he designed the three main bronze doors and various reliefs inside the church), the Supreme Reich Court… His Berlin workshop was one of the largest and most sought-after for the production of decorative arts, stone reliefs, and large-scale bronze castings. In 1911, he was awarded the Pour le Mérite for Science and Art (Pour le Mérite für Wissenschaft und Künste), the highest civilian decoration of the German Empire.
