Here is a rare example of a large statuary Parian portrait bust of famed 19th century American politician and anti-slavery hero, Charles Sumner (1811-1874) measuring more than 19” tall , with manufacturers cipher “J. Mc Dermot & S Copyright” incised at rear shoulder, very likely commissioned from a Stoke-on-Trent potter such as Robinson & Leadbeater or others , in very fine condition, with slight dust accretions consistent with age and one small nick to corner of jacket collar . Seldom found in this size, this measures about 19” tall, raised on large original waisted socle with original brass bolt fastener.. The reverse is also inscribed with Sumners passionate plea , “ Equality of rights is the first of rights!” which provoked the near deadly attack from Preston Brooks , who beat Sumner nearly to death on the Senate floor in 1856.
