French Louis Xvi Bronze Mounted Vernis Martin Secretary Desk By Henri Picard

Chairish

$18,650

Dimensions: 60.5 inches high x 30.5 inches wide x 16.5 inches deep Absolutely exceptional antique 19th century French Louis XVI style secretaire à abattant by Henri Picard, a piece of the highest quality that showcases the very best of French decorative arts and cabinetmaking. This is a true collector’s example, combining fine materials, masterful craftsmanship, and artistic detail throughout. The façade is centered by a beautifully executed Vernis Martin hand-painted figural panel, depicting a romantic scene rendered with remarkable delicacy and depth. The panel is framed by an elegant arrangement of finely hand-chased bronze ormolu mounts, which are of outstanding quality—crisp, detailed, and expertly applied. Notably, on the reverse side of several mounts, Henri Picard’s signature “HPR” is present, further confirming the authenticity and caliber of the work—an important and highly desirable detail for collectors. The case is executed with strong Louis XVI proportions, emphasizing symmetry, clean lines, and refined ornamentation. The craftsmanship is evident in every aspect, from the joinery to the precision of the mounts. The drop-front opens to reveal a felt-lined writing surface, providing a functional and refined workspace. The interior is thoughtfully arranged with six small drawers and a central shelf, ideal for organizing documents, writing instruments, or personal items. The layout is both practical and elegant, reflecting the intended dual purpose of these pieces—both decorative and highly usable. Below, the lower section features a larger dovetailed drawer, offering additional storage. This drawer also serves a structural purpose, helping to support the drop-front writing surface when open—an intelligent and traditional design feature. When fully removed, there is a faint pencil inscription reading “Linke” on the interior apron, suggesting a possible connection to François Linke, one of the most celebrated cabinetmakers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This raises the possibility that the piece was either supplied by Linke or passed through his workshop or network early on, adding an intriguing layer of historical interest. An especially desirable detail is that the piece retains its original key supplied by Henri Picard, a feature that is increasingly rare. Original keys are often lost over time, and their presence significantly enhances both the authenticity and collectibility of the piece. Overall, this secretaire represents top-tier French craftsmanship, combining artistry, function, and historical significance. It is equally suited for use as a writing desk, statement case piece, or centerpiece in a refined interior. The piece is in good antique condition with the exception of some light surface scratches, Minor finish loss and normal age related wear. As to be expected with items of age and use.
