Magnificent Empire Mahogany and Ormolu Secretaire (Early 19th Century) This exceptional secretaire à abattant (flaming secretaire) perfectly embodies the austere pomp and monumental elegance of the French Empire style, which flourished under Napoleon I (c. 1800-1815). Materials and Construction Wood: The cabinet is entirely veneered in flamed mahogany (Acajou flammé), an exotic and luxurious wood, whose vibrant grain is skillfully used to create a "butterfly" or symmetrical effect on the main front panel. The shellac finish enhances the depth of color and the luster of the wood. Marble Top: The top is topped with an elegant light-colored marble top with subtle grain, adding a touch of classic refinement and protecting the cabinet. Column Uprights: The structure is characterized by imposing, full-length column uprights, which lend the piece a solid architectural feel. These rest on turned, circular plinth feet. Rich Gilded Bronzes (Ormolu) Fire-gilded bronze (ormolu) details are a distinctive, high-quality feature of the Empire period. Capitals and Bases: The columns are adorned with richly carved and gilded bronze capitals and bases. The decoration features floral and geometric motifs, typical of the Neoclassical and Empire repertoire. Handles and Escutcheons: The three lower drawers feature ring handles held by a circular plaque decorated with a lion's head (a classic Roman motif and symbol of strength, much loved in the Empire). The escutcheons also feature elegant gilded bronze finishes. Upper Frieze: Beneath the marble, a small central gilded bronze frieze serves as an additional decorative and locking element. Interior (The Abattant) The central element is the abattant (the flap), which opens to reveal a sophisticated and functional interior: Desk Top: The lowered flap creates a comfortable work surface, upholstered in dark leather, ideal for writing. Mirror Niche: The interior is dominated by a central niche with a mirror, flanked by additional columns that amplify the space and light. Compartments and Drawers: It features numerous open compartments, small drawers, and secret compartments, perfect for organizing documents, pens, and precious objects. Condition and Period Period: Empire Style, first half of the 19th century (c. 1805-1820). Origin: France. Condition: Excellent overall condition. The mahogany features its original patina and a deep luster. The structural integrity is solid. The bronzes retain much of their original gilding. Dimensions: Height: 150 cm Width: 98 cm Depth: 52 cm
